Lyn Courtney Psychology Health Clinic was established to provide emphatic psychological services at the highest professional standard. We provide a client-centred approach primarily using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), CBT-based Acceptance Commitment Therapy (CBT-ACT), Dialectic Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI), which are evidence-based therapies.
We view the therapeutic relationship as a partnership between the client and psychologist where the client's problems and goals are identified. Clients are then provided with the tools and support necessary to make effective, positive changes. We assist individuals to identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts, feelings and/or behaviours so they can reach their full potential and increase psychological wellbeing. We specialize in working with adults, couples, and organizations.

Hello! I graduated with a Bachelor of Psychology Degree (HONS) from James Cook University (JCU) and I have been a Registered Psychologist in Private Practice for 15 years. Concurrently, I was employed as a Lecturer and Subject Coordinator at JCU, Department of Education and Department of Psychology, and Supervisor and Trainer of Lifeline Telephone Counsellors. I have extensive experience working with adults across a range of issues using evidence-based treatments, which means therapy that is informed by science and has been shown to be effective. I am highly published in the area of psychosocial health and wellbeing and a member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and the American Psychological Association (APA).
Depression, anxiety, and panic attacks are some of the most common and uncomfortable emotions that one can experience. Through counseling and treatment, we are able to help you recover motivation, perspective, and joy that you once had in your life.
Many individuals can experience symptoms associated with painful and traumatic circumstances or natural disasters. Anxiety, fear, and hopelessness are a few emotions that can linger post traumatic events. We can help you overcome these symptoms and guide you through the process of grief and healing.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has been shown to be highly effective in reducing the psychological distress associated with chronic pain. Through learning adaptive coping skills people are able to reduce the pain experience, improve positive social function and generally cope better with chronic pain.
Stress is an expected response to challenging or dangerous situations. A small amount of stress is motivating and good 'Eustress'. But if the stress becomes greater than our ability to cope, it can affect quality of life and cause 'Distress', and people suffer then from a breakdown of physical and mental health.
Relationship counseling and conflict resolution skills can be beneficial to couples who are looking to strengthen their emotional connection, in all stages of their relationship. Therapy sessions are held in a supportive environment to discuss issues and solutions to better strengthen your relationship.
Many people have trouble managing their anger. We can assist adults who want to learn how to manage anger in a constructive and healthy way. We can also help anyone with a friend or family member who has problems with anger. Bullying is a serious issue in workplaces and a risk factor for anxiety, depression, and suicide.
Grief, Loss and Bereavement Therapy. The death of a loved one is among the most traumatic experiences you can endure in your life. For most people, it means that their life is changed forever. Bereavement therapy is for anyone – your loss doesn’t have to be recent. If someone’s death has affected you, you could benefit from grief counselling.
Trained to treat patients with a wide range of Mental Health Disorders: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Bipolar Disorders, Personality Disorders, Anxiety and Panic Disorders, Depressive Disorders, Alcohol and Substance Abuse Disorders, Adult Attention Deficit Disorders, Personality Disorders, Self-Harm and Suicide Prevention. Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge-eating Disorders are complex disorders. Psychotherapy can be helpful in addressing the underlying causes of eating disorders. It affords an individual in recovery the opportunity to address and heal from traumatic life events and learn healthier coping skills and methods for expressing emotion.
